Optimal Health in Times of Crisis
2020 was one for the books for sure! We began our year with losing an all-time gifted player with Kobe Bryant perishing in a helicopter accident only to be followed by more devastation with the Covid-19 pandemic, mass rioting, protests over stay at home orders and massive protests for equality in our justice, healthcare, and penal systems. The highly stress inducing effects of electing a new president and all the crazy-making aftermath. We are a planet on the brink of massive change. Changing the way we interact with one another, changing the way we work in businesses, and changing our mindsets to include empathy for our fellow humans.
What is crystal clear after all the destruction is that the health care system does not hold up, no matter how much money you throw at it and the only real chance we have to get through any of this (regardless of your color, financial assets or age) is to take control of your health. Look for the root cause of why you are having digestive stress, look for reasons your mental health has been suffering, and be curious as to why, no matter what you try, you cannot lose weight, lower your cholesterol or blood pressure, and cannot seem to find a peaceful nights rest.
Now is the time to take control! Take responsibility for your health. Choose to learn something new about yourself, investigate how you can make the best out of your current conditions. As a health coach, the one thing I know for sure, it is difficult to do it by yourself. Partner with your doctors, spouse or best friend, find a support group, or hire a health coach. Of all the people who consider themselves to be avid exercisers, only 5% actually see results, and the ones who succeed hire a trainer or coach for accountability. Hiring a health coach, who can assist you in creating, implementing, and meeting your personal goals for health, well-being, and reducing stress is key to making lasting change.
Good health is not a one-size-fits-all; it is very individualized, what works for one person is completely different for another. Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to figure out how to fuel and care for the only thing you really have control over, YOU.
Through the collaborative approach of health coaching, together we can find the best path forward. To really make it through exposure to Covid-19 you need optimal health as we have no idea how long this current situation will last and our best defense is managing stress, losing weight, finding better sleep habits, limiting screen time and improving our social connections.
My wish for humanity is that we continue to come together as a community through the thoughtful efforts of giving assistance to our family members, caring for your sick neighbors, and finding time to take good care of ourselves. Remember the old adage that you need to put the oxygen mask on yourself before putting one on the person next you. Taking care of your health will allow you to continue to care deeply for your fellow humans in need.
In good health. Stay safe. Be well.
